An American traffic expert is offering some ideas on how Calgary can curb speeding, especially on neighbourhood streets.
Tom Vanderbilt says measures such as sidewalk-widening, tree-planting and removing traffic signs all help.
Vanderbilt says you can always put up “Children Playing” warnings or bring in those radar-driven signs that post your speed.
He tells The Calgary Herald they work for a while, but once signs disappear, the speeders return.
He says people tend to drive more carefully if they feel a social connection to a neighbourhood, and says wider sidewalks and trees accomplish that.
