Family regrets calling 9-1-1

The family of a man shot by Calgary police Thursday night say they regret ever calling 9-1-1.

The man has been identified by a friend as Peter Spiewak.

The 31 year-old died after being shot by two officers on the steps of his Citadel home around 10 pm.

Ryan Smith, speaking on behalf of the family, tells the Calgary Sun they feel guilty for making the call and are angry their plea for help ended in death.

Smith says the family is angry at how officers dealt with it and they only wanted police to force Peter to get help.

Police say he was aggressive and armed with an axe and the department is fulling backing the actions of the officers.

The head of the police association is calling for a fast-tracked fatality inquiry.
