75-year old cyclist dies after accident

A 75-year-old man from Calgary has died less than a week after suffering from injuries from a cycling accident.
Harry Schaefer was riding his bicycle on the Bow River pathways on October 17th and crashed into a closed barrier gate.
Schaefer was thrown to the ground and was transported to Foothills hospital with life threatening injuries.
Duty Inspector Chris Butler, tells 660News, Schaefer’s awareness could be the cause of the accident.
“He did have a safety helmet on but it’s just unfortunately the impact of the injury on his head was just too severe that the helmet simply would not have protected him.”
Butler reminds cyclists to avoid listening to ipods to ensure maximum awareness while on the pathways.
