Ahead of the opening of the Global Clean Energy Congress and Exhibition at Stampede Park Tuesday, there was a major green power generation announcement.
NR Green Power and General Electric have teamed up to turn waste heat into electricity.
The President and CEO of NR Green Power, Murray Birch, tells 660News the initiative — along the Alliance Pipeline in Whitecourt, Alberta — will generate 14 mega-watts of electricity per hour.
“Fourteen megawatts will basically drive about 14,000 homes,” says Birch. “That’s a pretty big achievement as we move towards a cleaner energy economy.”
Birch adds that waste heat is a big problem for the energy industry.
“There’s many industrial processes where heat is being wasted,” he notes. “If we could recover that heat, and generate some power or something from it, it’s all to the better.”
Birch’s company and GE plan to turn waste heat from jet engine turbines, that are used along the Alliance Pipeline near Whitecourt, into electricity.
Four similar waste heat and recovery projects are already up and running in Saskatchewan.
