Peace Bridge now a year behind schedule

It’s an anniversary that many would rather put behind them; the controversial Peace Bridge was supposed to be completed one year ago.
The multi-million dollar project has faced criticism on all fronts, construction delays and faulty welding issues that have pushed the timeline back three times.
Now, work on the pedestrian walkway over the Bow River will enter its final phase in the next week and a half.
However, it’s still months away from being ready to give the public access from downtown to the river pathways in the community of Sunnyside.
City Transportation General Manager Mac Logan tells The Calgary Herald the developer, Graham Infrastructure, has been pretty clear they will try to get some additional money.
Any additional cost over-runs have to be approved by city council.
City officials say they have signed a fixed-price contract of $18-million with the developer, which should ease matters for the city.
The Mayor has said that any extra expenditures should be paid by the contractor and not the taxpayer.
Alderman Gian-Carlo Carra says the project was supposed to bring people together in civic pride, which may be its biggest failure.
