Holiday spending projected to be down this year

City sidewalks and malls are starting to get busier as the Christmas shopping season approaches, but a new poll says most Canadians will be spending a little less this year with the average budget at $711.
Early-morning commuters tell 660News the economic downturn will put a damper on their Christmas spending.
“There’s not as much money as we used to have, and everything else is going up,” says one woman.
“We’re going to budget a little bit, but we’re not going to go crazy,” says one man.
For others, buying gifts takes a backseat to travelling to a warmer place for the holidays.
“We just spend ours on airfare to go to the States. That’s our Christmas present,” says one man.
“We’re all going to Mexico for Christmas, so that’s the whole Christmas present,” says another listener.
