Remembrance Day memorials vandalized

Only days before Remembrance Day, the city is working quickly to clean up graffiti after vandals spray-painted Poppy Plaza, the city’s tribute to fallen Calgary soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in various wars and peace-keeping missions.
Poppy Plaza is part of a nine kilometre stretch on Memorial Drive known as Calgary Soldiers Memorial. It was hit last Thursday night.
Calling it a clear case of vandalism, City Bylaw boss Bill Bruce says his officers are reviewing video surveillance of the area from nearby buildings in the hopes of catching the culprits. They’re also taking tips from the public on the city’s 3-1-1 information line.
With Remembrance Day on Friday, the insensitive actions have angered and disappointed some Calgarians with emotional ties to Poppy Plaza.
Michael Hornburg lost his son Nathan in Afghanistan in 2007. Saying he’s disappointed and saddened by the recent events, Hornburg calls the plaza “a positive reminder” of what his son and others accomplished.
The Royal Canadian Legion’s Phil MacAulay adds: “You just don’t think something like that would happen anytime of the year, but especially now.”
