Board marks major milestone

Before getting down to business in council chambers Monday morning, Mayor Naheed Nenshi paused to recognize what he called an important milestone in the development of our city, the 100th anniversary of the Calgary Planning Commission.
On November 13th, 1911, Calgary’s then-city council established its first planning commission.
The mayor says council knew back then as they know now, that great cities just don’t happen, they are planned.
“Over the years, hundreds of volunteer members of Calgary Planning Commission have dedicated countless hours of their time to Calgary’s form, function and identity as a great city. This outstanding achievement in the Commission’s ongoing contribution to the City of Calgary and its citizens can best be described as a century of vision,” said Nenshi.
To mark the occasion there is an exhibit set up in city’s hall atrium with photos and artifacts of significant development events.
The Commission has also produced a series of videos for local teachers to use in the classroom.
