Fire department asks Calgarians to avoid icy water

With snow on the ground and temperatures falling, ice is starting to form around most bodies of water throughout the city.

As a result, the Calgary fire department has been busy responding to dozens of calls about children playing near ponds and sloughs.

They are asking Calgarians to educate their children of the dangers of playing around water during this time.

Brian McAsey tells 660News any ice in Calgary is absolutely unreliable.

“Especially during this time of year, it will not hold any weight.  That means you will be entering the cold water and hypothermia will set in immediately and your life is going to be in peril.”

He adds, “Even being around the river or a lake or a slough can be dangerous as you can easily slide in there and sometimes the ground around can be very slippery.”

McAsey says if anyone sees someone near ice or falling into water to immediately call 9-1-1.
