Mayor’s Food Drive

The 23rd annual Mayor’s Food Drive kicked off Wednesday with a fierce fight for bragging rights and the ‘golden shopping cart’ as local media squared off in a sort of shopping spree scavenger hunt at Southcentre Safeway.

660News’ Doug Reynolds, Cindy White and Megan Robinson got in on the fun.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi told the crowd that this year’s campaign is more important than ever as food bank demand in Calgary is up sharply.

He says, it’s the second highest increase in the country.

The mayor says he hopes those of us who can afford it step up for those who need help.

“Thankfully, the food bank has been able to meet the demand, but they’ve only been able to meet that demand because people have been generous,” says Nenshi.

Last year’s campaign topped $740-thousand in donations.

Donations are accepted at any Safeway location and at most local car dealerships over the next month.

Incidentally, our own Doug, Cindy and Megan finished in the middle of the media pack!
