Flu season officially underway

Alberta Health Services has confirmed nine influenza cases in the province.

The Senior Medical Officer of Health calls it the tip of the iceberg and Dr. Gerry Predy is also urging all Albertan’s to get immunized.

So far only 365-thousand people have rolled up their sleeves, that’s less than 10 per cent of the population and about three per cent behind last year’s immunization program at this time.

Dr. Predy says even people who consider themselves healthy should get the shot not only to protect themselves but other people in their lives.

He says increased immunization will also take some pressure off the health care system this winter, especially emergency rooms.

The immunization numbers don’t include the shots that have been distributed through doctors offices and pharmacies.
