City’s shelters exceed capacity

The city’s homeless shelters are nearing or at capacity as the weekend deep-freeze continues.
The Calgary Drop-in Centre houses around 1,200 people a night with the arrival of sub zero temperatures.
Louise Gallagher with the centre says even at capacity, they won’t turn people away. “You know when I go to that door and somebody wants to come in and it’s twenty below out, they’re not a statistic they are a human being in need of shelter.”
Gallagher adds winter clothing is vital during winter and encourages Calgarians to donate mitts, socks, toques and winter jackets.
Other shelters are also quickly filling up, Inn from the Cold houses houses around 120 people a night.
