“This is going to be my first World Cup start on home turf,” says Kelby Halbert, a member of the Canadian Men’s Ski Team who’s looking forward to the first FIS races of the season this weekend at Lake Louise. “So I’m really excited about it and hoping for a good result.”
Halbert and the rest of the best men skiers in the world will converge in Southern Alberta this weekend to kick off both the Downhill and Super-G race seasons.
“It’s a beautiful place,” adds Halbert. “It’s nice, it’s home. I love racing there, so definitely I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Lake Louise will be a busy venue this month. After the men, this weekend, the women take their turn on the hill the following weekend.
Leading the men’s team this year is Erik Guay, who — despite struggling with back problems last season — won the downhill title at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships.
