Grey Cup touches down in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Grey Cup is now in Vancouver ahead of Sunday’s big game. The trophy landed in the city just before noon on Wednesday aboard a Canadian Forces Cormorant helicopter.
It marks the official kickoff to the biggest Canadian football game of the year. The B.C. Lions will take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in front of a sold out crowed at BC Place Stadium.
Dario Ciccone, 10, got to ride in the chopper alongside the cup. “Somebody phoned my house and my dad answered it and they asked if I wanted to go in a helicopter with the grey cup. I thought for sure.” Ciccone plays safety for the Vancouver Trojans.
The Mayor walked along side the young footballer as he delivered the cup. Gregor Robertson says the city does not expect a repeat of the Stanley Cup Riot.
“It is an updated plan. (The) city and VPD have worked closely with the Grey Cup Committee to make sure we’re anticipating any scenario and also to support the efforts that are planned. Which I think will be really positive. It’s a very different event by its nature.”
Robertson says he’s still working on a wager with the Mayor of Winnipeg.
Game time on Sunday is 3:00 p.m.
