Premier wants Canadian energy strategy

Alberta’s new premier took time out of her busy schedule to be the keynote speaker at a Calgary Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

She took the opportunity to call for a Canadian Energy Strategy that would unite provinces and help grow the industry across the country.

Premier Redford says there are numerous reasons for creating a Canadian energy strategy, but one of the biggest is that it would create a united front for new projects.

“So that we can all support certain infrastructure projects like Gateway,” she says. “One of the reasons for that is it creates economic success for Alberta and for the country.”

She says the recent delays on the Keystone project have opened the eyes of her fellow premiers to the value of having a national strategy.

But she concedes Alberta must do a better job promoting the progress it’s made in green energy solutions rather than just trying to armlock other provinces into Alberta’s policies.

“The traditional approach Alberta has taken is that we are the economic engine of the country, and that if we could put the right policies in place at the federal level then everyone would benefit from that,” says Redford.

She says showing other provinces that Alberta is making strides in carbon capture, and alternative energy sources would help lift the controversy around the oil sands and go a long way towards opening lines of communication between the provinces about a Canadian Energy Strategy.
