Charities hurt by dip in gambling

Alberta charities will take a hit because of a downturn in gambling revenues.

About $2.1-billion in gaming and liquor revenue came in last year, but charities saw their share go from $335-million to $330-million.

Leslie Evans of the Federation of Calgary Communities tells The Calgary Herald while the decline is subtle, it will have an effect on community groups struggling to maintain current donor levels.

Overall figures show Albertans spent a whopping $23-billion in VLTs, slot machines and lottery tickets last year.
