Hockey Calgary angered by rec centre cuts

Hockey Calgary says losing three ice sheets it was counting on is a huge blow for the city.

President Todd Millar tells the Calgary Herald the organization is angered by a last minute decision by the federal government to make recreational facilities ineligible for funding under the P3 program.

The city was expecting to receive $100-million for four recreation centres, three containing ice surfaces.

Millar says the decision caught Hockey Calgary off guard.

In recent years, a shortage of ice rinks in the city has led to scheduling headaches for minor and recreational hockey leagues, with games starting late at night and sometimes as far away as Airdrie and Cochrane.

Minor league teams often don’t receive enough access to ice to fit the national standard, three practices for every game set by Hockey Canada.

Last season, Calgary teams averaged 1.1 practices per game.
