Woman killed in Innisfail explosion was targeted

RCMP says a disabled woman killed in an explosion was specifically targeted.

Victoria Shachtay died in the explosion Friday at her townhouse complex in Innisfail, north of Calgary.

Sergeant Patrick Webb says other people in town shouldn’t be afraid.

“What we’d like the public to realize is that inspite of the fact that we’re saying this is targeted to this individual, we want them to still be a little bit cautious about any unanticipated hand delivered packages,” said Webb.

“We don’t anticipate that there are others ones that are going to be coming out there so we don’t want people to get particularly paranoid about it but we want them to consider this and be wary.”

Police say the explosion came from a package delivered to Shachtay’s doorstep.

A second woman, Shachtay’s aide, was also in the apartment at the time of the explosion, but was not injured.

Shachtay’s six-year-old daughter was reportedly in school at the time.

Webb says he can’t reveal why someone wanted to hurt the woman.

Police have no suspects.
