Mayor wants Stampede declared National Historic event

Mayor Naheed Nenshi will table a motion on Monday, asking city council to approve an application to the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada to formally recognize the Stampede.

The timing of the motion couldn’t be any better, considering the Stampede will mark its 100th anniversary next summer.

Parks Canada is on board with the motion, but the final decision rests with the Federal Government.

Alderman Jim Stevenson tells 660News, he can’t believe the Stampede doesn’t already enjoy such a designation.

He thinks the mayor shouldn’t have any problem getting support for his motion.

Stampede spokesman Doug Fraser tells the Calgary Herald, “We’re truly honoured to be considered for the nomination.”

Calgary has already been dubbed as Canada’s Cultural Capital for 2012.
