ATA wants changes for admission standards for Alberta high school grads

An official with the Alberta Teachers Association wants post secondary schools in this province to change their admission policies for Alberta high school grads.
The ATA’s Jonathan Teghtmeyer points to a recent move by the University of Saskatchewan which has decided to take students from Alberta based on their school-awarded mark or a blended mark, which ever is better.
At issue is the Provincial Standardized Test for Grade 12 students which accounts for 50 percent of their final mark.
But the University of Saskatchewan has discovered that, on average, Alberta students perform better than their high school counterparts from Saskatchewan, Manitoba, British Columbia and Ontario. The U of S found students from Alberta see their averages drop by about 6.4 per cent when they begin studies at the school, compared to as much as 19.6 per cent for students from other provinces.
Officials from the universities of Calgary, Lethbridge and Alberta declined interviews on Teghtmeyer’s views when contacted by the Calgary Herald.
