Southern Alberta drivers slip sliding away

Road conditions inside and outside of Calgary city limits were in poor condition Sunday morning following Saturday night’s blast of winter.

Duty Inspector Paul Malchow tells 660News, city crews worked on the main arteries in the city overnight, but many streets — particularly side streets — were still an adventure as of early Sunday morning.

Malchow says the storm forced closures in some areas of the city Saturday evening, most notably the hill at Bow Trail and Sarcee because of icy conditions.

At the storm’s peak, during dinner hour when holiday shoppers were heading home, police dealt with about a dozen accidents at once.  In all — between 5p.m. and 11p.m. on Saturday — there were 63 non-injury collisions and 10 minor-injury accidents.

Outside the city, the AMA reported the QEII from Calgary north to Red Deer was in fair condition.  But south of Okotoks Highway 2 was in poor shape.

The Number 1 from Calgary to Banff was rated in good condition by the AMA, but only fair between Calgary and Strathmore with an improvement east of Strathmore heading to Brooks and Medicine Hat.

The biggest incident outside Calgary Saturday was a 16 vehicle pile up near Ponoka that occurred around 1p.m.  Adding to the chaos, a spill of 14-thousand litres of diesel fuel in a ditch.
