In an effort to curb the number of people who ride buses or C-trains without paying, Calgary Transit wants to increase fines.
The Calgary Sun reports earlier this year Transit officials inspected 36-thousand riders only to find 4.5 per cent didn’t have a ticket or pass.
Among the reasons given for not paying, “I didn’t have any cash” and “I didn’t think I would get caught.”
The fare freeloaders are cutting into Transit revenue.
Machines that accept credit and debit card payments have been installed at Transit stations around the city.
Edmonton has already boosted its non-fare compliance fine to $250 dollars, Calgary will likely follow suit, but council still needs to approve the move.
