Occupy Calgary protesters must leave Olympic Plaza

The City of Calgary has won its court case against Occupy Calgary protesters camped out at Olympic Plaza.

Chief Justice Neil Wittmann has granted an injunction forcing the demonstrators to  clear the park and remove their tents by Friday.

Those who don’t comply will be found in contempt of court.

Protesters have been camped out at the park for over six weeks as part of the global Occupy movement started in Wall Street, protesting against financial greed and corruption.

Whittmann’s ruling also restrains protestors from camping in any park or land owned by the City without a permit.

Alderman Diane Colley-Urquhart says, this movement is good news for the City of Calgary and the country, but it went on too long.

“This should never have been accelerated to the level it was by bringing in CEMA and negotiating witht them and giving them Prince’s Island Park,” said Colley-Urquhart. There’s a lot to be learned from this and I’m exteremly pleased with the decision.”

Colley-Urquhart adds, she will be doing some investigating into the movement, regarding the involvement of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency at Olympic Plaza.
