Opportunity and profit keep Calgary gangs in operation

Despite an on-going war by police against organized crime in Calgary, gangs continue to operate and recruit new members.

In an e-mail from Australia, the President of the Calgary Police Association tells 660News police need to keep the pressure on.

John Dooks says reducing opportunity or profit does not stop gangs; it simply slows them down and forces them to readjust their tactics.

The Calgary Herald reports even though law agencies have managed to deport or arrest and charge more than a dozen members of two gangs involved in a triple homicide back in 2009, the FOB and FK gangs continue to function.

The Alberta Law Response Teams puts the number of criminal organizations in the province at 115, with investigators routinely seizing large amounts of drugs and weapons.

Police agencies across the west are sharing more information with each other about gangs as inter-provincial activity is reportedly on the rise.
