YWCA clears air concerning fund raising alert

The YWCA has cleared the air over reports of fraudulent fund raising activity being conducted on its behalf in Calgary.

“We since found out that it was fine, but we actually called the CPS” (Calgary Police Service) “to confirm what’s going on,” Associate Director of Communications Christine Wilson tells 660News in clarifying reports that someone was going door-to-door soliciting contributions. “They said too that they do receive many calls regarding suspect fund raising activity this time of the year.”

“We do not engage any third parties to do so on our behalf” (of fund raising), Wilson continues. “However, there are — at certain times of the year — third-party organizations that do raise money on behalf of the YWCA.”

Nevertheless, the women’s group wants you to be vigilant when it comes to possible fraudulent activity involving charities.

“People should have a charity number, should be properly identified as a representative of that charity and/or association,” adds Wilson. “A tax receipt should always be issued, especially if cash is given, a tax receipt should be issued right away.”

Wilson adds if you suspect criminal activity with any solicitations, contact police immediately.
