World Juniors to boost Alberta tourism

While kids are counting down the days until Santa comes, hockey fans are chomping at the bit as the World Juniors is just around the corner, getting underway Boxing Day.

Hoteliers and others in the service industry are also looking forward to the tournament, as tourists- and their chequebooks- get set to roll through Calgary and Edmonton.

President and CEO of Tourism Calgary Randy Williams said Wednesday, the World Juniors will bring about $80-million to the province as visitors take up residence in hotels, dine at restaurants and buy up that must-have World Juniors swag.

“We (Calgary) get 21 out of the 31 games that are occurring in the province so we expect the bulk of the 80-million will be proportionately here in Calgary,” Williams said.

The playoffs are also slated to happen at the Saddledome, which will help further boost Calgary’s bottom line, he added.
