Alderman calling for an increase in cabs

A city alderman wants to get more taxis on Calgary streets, especially during busy times of year like Christmas.
Diane Colley-Urquhart is pushing for change after several reports of people not being able to get a cab home after their office Christmas party; the delays could get worse once new provincial drunk driving laws take effect.
Currently the city has limited the number of taxi license plates to just over 1,400 with 3,900 licensed drivers.
Ald. Colley-Urquhart compares Alberta’s upcoming changes to its impaired driving law to that of B.C., which is also cracking down on impaired drivers.
She says that province saw an increase in demand for cabs as a result of a similar legislation.
What she’s suggesting is piloting the release of a limited number of non- transferable “night time only plates,” saying there needs to be more cabs on the road during the holiday season and during special events.
A report should be available by the spring.
