Council rallying to save Famous 5 on $50

Mayor Naheed Nenshi says with the support of his council he’ll write to Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney, urging him to keep Alberta’s Famous 5 on the $50 bill.

The image is set to be replaced by an image of a research vessel sent into Canada’s north.

The Famous 5, including Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung, Henrietta Muir Edwards, Louise McKinney and Irene Parlby, fought to change the legal definition of people to include woman back in the 20s.

A Bank of Canada spokeswoman tells The Calgary Herald they’ve already started printing the new notes which will replace the old ones starting in March.
