You can feel like an Olympic athlete

Do you have plans for January 2nd?

Winsport, which manages Canada Olympic Park, has an idea and invitation for you.

It’s their first-ever “Passport to Sport” event, in which dozens of elite Canadian skiers, sliders, jumpers and hockey players — who have honed their skills at the facility — share the thrill of winter sports.

“There will be world’s champions here, Olympians, who will be training here,” Winsports’ Dan O’Neil tells 660News of the opportunity for people to get out, get active and experience something they’ve never done. “They’ll hang out with you.  You can ask some questions about the sports.  The goal is:  let’s get some more people out here.”

Gold medal skeleton racer John Montgomery says his moment of glory at Whistler during the 2010 Winter Olympics would never have happened without a visit to COP 10 years earlier. He discovered skeleton racing by chance during a visit to the facility when he first moved to Caglary. His hope is that “Passport to Sport” will enable Calgarians to discover a facility that he says is unlike any other in the world.

“You’ve got ski jumps,” Montgomery tells 660News. “You’ve got bobsled, skeleton tracks.  World-class hockey rinks and skating rinks.  World-class half-pipe ski runs, cross country skiing, all this stuff … at COP.”

“Yeah we’ll able to show somebody something cool,” he adds. “Give them an experience that they’ll be able to talk about with friends and family, going:  ‘Yeah, I did the skeleton.  I went down face first.  It was crazy.'”

The multi-sport clinic runs January 2nd from 8:30am to 4pm at Canada Olympic Park.  Participation is free with the purchase of a hill ticket.
