BMO warns of fraudulent charities

As well-meaning Canadians dig deep into their pockets to donate to charities this holiday season, BMO’s out with a reminder there are fraudsters who will abuse that generosity.
The bank says to ask the solicitor for proof of their identity, and to provide the charity’s registered name, address and phone number.
You can then verify with the Canada Revenue Agency that the organization is legitimate.
BMO advises against giving cash because if the agency turns out not to be a registered charity, it’s hard to get your money back; instead, offer to make a donation online, or write a cheque.
And when you do donate, make sure to get a tax receipt.
