Fatal Deerfoot crash delays flights

Not only was the Deerfoot backed up for hours because of a deadly crash Wednesday; a number of flights had to be delayed as well.

A man died after his vehicle smashed into a light standard northbound on Deerfoot Trail near Airport Trail just after 4:00 p.m.

Duty Insp. Paul Malcow says the vehicle crossed all three lanes of Deerfoot and that is why the investigation took longer than normal.

The driver, a Calgary man in his 40’s, was trapped and had to be extricated by firefighters.  He passed away in hospital.

Police say it’s still too early in the investigation to say if speed or alcohol were factors.

It was just early last week that a young man from Airdrie died when he crashed off Deerfoot along almost the same stretch near Airport Trail.
