Continued economic growth expected in 2012

Even though the global economy is on less-than-solid ground, economists anticipate a third-straight year of growth in Canada.

A new poll by careerbuilder.ca suggests more than one-third of employers plan to add full-time jobs next year; many of them in IT, engineering and administrative roles.

That’s up from 32 per cent in 2011, and 29 per cent in 2010.

Employers in this province are gearing up for continued growth in 2012.

An Alberta Human Services spokesman tells The Calgary Herald employers are leaving no stone unturned as they plan for an anticipated 114,000 worker shortfall in the next ten years; one that could threaten growth if it’s not reduced.

Just last month, the province and 15 Alberta employers hosted a virtual job fair, attracting 1,700 job seekers from North America and Europe.

Former Employment Minister Thomas Lukaszuk went stateside a couple months ago to draw workers to the province.

Meanwhile, Bow Valley College’s VP of Learning says new programs are created to feed anticipated demand and existing programs are expanded based on labour shortage predictions.
