Wind warning for southern Alberta

A wind warning is in effect for southern Alberta Wednesday, with possible gusts hitting 90 kilometres an hour at times.
Higher winds are anticipated in the Crowsnest Pass, Lethbridge and Claresholm areas.
660 weather specialist John Wilson, has been looking at some of the wind speeds at the Nakiska ridge top.
“At 9:00 Wednesday morning the ridge top winds were south west 59, gusting to 123 kilometres an hour. Now that doesn’t directly translate to ground wind speeds here on the flats, in fact they’re quite a bit less. But we do watch the Nakiska ridge tops for a hint of what’s to come,” he says.
Winds in the city remained calm much of Wednesday morning, but Environment Canada expects gusts to pick up in the afternoon and weaken early evening.
In lieu of last months wind storm that toppled trees, damaged houses and ultimately closed the down town core, The Calgary Fire Department is offering Calgarians tips to keep themselves and their homes protected.
Brian McAsey with the fire department says people should go outside and secure their belongings. That includes decorations, flower pots and furniture.
He ask people use discretion when calling 9-1-1. He says if it’s not an emergency, all non urgent calls should be directed to 3-1-1.
