Ecstasy alert for Calgary area

Alberta Health Services is warning about the danger of using the street drug ecstasy.

Preliminary toxicology tests indicate ecstasy, or a combination of toxic substances sold on the street as ecstasy, are the likely cause of three recent Calgary-area deaths.

Since April, Calgary emergency departments have treated more than 100 people for ecstasy-related health concerns.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Judy MacDonald says, people need to be aware of the extreme danger of ingesting the drug.

She says ecstasy is not only capable of making people very sick, but says the drug can kill.

The source and amount of the drug on the street is unknown.  For more information about ecstasy, click here.
