Another successful check stop holiday season

New Years is one of the busiest times of the year for check stops in our city and Saturday night Calgary police were out once again.
The CPS have been running their enhanced Check Stop program over the holidays to try and stop people from drinking and driving.
Acting Sergeant Bob Pughe tells 660News, the program has been successful once again with a number of impaired driving charges, 24 hour suspensions and drug seizures.
He says the goal is to be visible to people so they can drive home the message that if you drink and drive, there will be consequences and you will get caught, risk going to jail and even hurting or killing somebody else or yourself and it affects not only your life but those around you.
Pughe says surprisingly, New Years is not usually too bad as people tend to plan ahead but there are always those out there that don’t get the message.
He adds, they hear all sorts of excuses from people who get caught including how its ruined their lives and how they thought only a few drinks would be fine.
