An exchange to Canada was cut short for Croatian student Barbara Kranjcec after a nagging sore throat turned out to be something far more serious.
The 17-year-old had only been in Calgary for three months when a battery of tests determined she had Leukemia.
The Calgary Herald reports nearly two months after the alarming diagnosis, her oncologist told her the chemotherapy worked and she’s cancer-free now, but still has to continue treatment at home.
Kranjcec is set to leave Calgary Thursday evening with family members who came over following the traumatic discovery.
