CNN likes Calgary

According to CNN, if Calgarians want to hit one of the top five must-see destinations in the world in 2012, we don’t even have to leave home.

The news network lists our city at number five among the places to visit this year because of the centennial Stampede this July.

We hit the streets to find out if Calgarians agree with where it ranked.

Many told us we deserve to be at least in the top ten because of Stampede but those same people admit locals likely take the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth for granted.

“I think it’s great for the city.   I think the locals tend to stay at home a little bit more during Stampede and stuff because it’s so high-priced but sometimes I think the locals don’t enjoy it as much as the tourists,” says Sherry.

Others aren’t surprised we’re ranked so high.

“There’s been lots of coverage and lots of exposure over the last couple years and then you had the Royal visit and all that other stuff so we’ve gotten lots of exposure internationally so that would raise the awareness, I guess,” says Brandy.

A Stampede spokesperson summed up what a lot of people told us — we know who we are and what we have but we’re still pleasantly surprised to rank so high on CNN’s list.
