Wednesday is the birthday of Canada’s first Prime Minister.
John A. Macdonald was born in Glasgow, Scotland on January 11th, 1815, and when he was a young boy his family emigrated to Kingston, which was then in the province of Upper Canada.
He was first elected to the legislature in the Colonial Province of Canada in 1844 and became Premier in 1857.
He was instrumental in the formation of the British North America Act which still comprises a big part of the country’s constitution.
He was named Canada’s first Prime Minister and held the post for 19 years, dying shortly after winning the 1896 election offer Wilfred Laurier’s Liberals.
