Warm winter weather reduces collision count

Calgary police report the number of crashes on city streets was down almost 50 per cent in November and December compared to the same period a year ago.

Traffic Constable Jim Lebedev says the lack of snow and ice was likely a big factor.

The total number of crashes in Calgary over the past two months was 5,050 including 392 injury wrecks.

Back in 2010, the number was 10,295, with 547 injury crashes.

Lebedev says the best way to avoid a trip to the autobody shop during the winter months is to drive according to the elements, which usually means slow down and leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front of you.

He also says, for the most part, there is no such thing as an accident because most collisions are avoidable or preventable.
