Minor hockey week underway

Hockey moms and dads across Calgary are gassing up the mini-vans for the busiest time of the season.

The 42nd edition of Esso Minor Hockey Week kicks off Thursday night with a special ceremony at the South Fish Creek Arena.

It’s one of the biggest minor hockey tournaments in the world with nearly 10,000 kids taking part over the next week and a half.

Kyle plays left defence for the pee wee Briuns. “It’s about having fun, but I’d also like to go for the gold,” admits Kyle.

Hundreds of games will be staged at virtually every city arena.  500 teams from atom to junior are taking part.

Many of the parents who will be driving the kids to the rink have played in this tournament themselves: it’s been the marquis minor hockey event in Calgary since 1970.
