How cold is it?
So cold, even Canada Olympic Park — one of the city’s most notable winter-time playgrounds — has been forced to shut down.
“Looking at Environment Canada, they’re saying, Monday through Wednesday, low to mid 20’s in the minus range,” COP spokesperson Dave Oviatt tells 660News about the decision to temporarily close. “So we’re hoping to be back open on Thursday, but we’re going to wait and see a couple of days from now what the weather holds out for.”
The temporary closure for skiers and snowboarders is somewhat ironic.
“A week-and-a-half ago we were wanting more snow, so we” (could) “make more snow on the hill,” adds Oviatt. “Suddenly, we’re the totally opposite.”
But Oviatt and the rest of the staff at COP welcome the snow as well as the ability to make it.
“When arrived here first thing this morning, the guns were ablazing,” he says. “The colder it gets, the more snow we can make. So it’s good in a way. A couple of weeks from now we have the World Cup Freestyle event here, and we certainly needed help with the snow.”
COP hopes to re-open to the public by Thursday, but Oviatt says a decision isn’t likely until Tuesday or Wednesday.
