Power use in Alberta reaches record high

For the second time in as many days, Alberta’s demand for electricity has reached an all-time high.

On Monday, Albertans used 10,609 megawatts, breaking the record set on Sunday.

The Alberta Electric System Operator says the current cold front, combined with overall provincial growth in demand for electricity, are factors contributing to the record high levels occurring in just two days.

You can help reduce the demand on the electricity system by putting off running major appliances like dishwashers and dryers until after the supper hour.

The AESO also asks Albertans to turn off any unnecessary lights, or non-essential appliances and use a timer for your car’s block heater.
