Power use record prompts energy saving advice

The Alberta Electric System Operator reports a new record for power consumption has been set in Alberta.
Sunday night at 6 p.m. demand reached 10 thousand 315 megawatts, smashing the previous high record estalbished back in December 2009.
With even colder temperatures in the forecast for Monday night a new record could be set.
Albertan’s are being asked to put off running major appliances like dishwashers and driers until after the supper hour.
A spokesman with Epcor says a little conservation can help reduce not only power demand but individual power bills.
Tim le Rirche tells 660News, a programmable thermostat helps regulate the temperature in a house, especially when people are not home or are sleeping.
le Riche says people should take an inventory of their appliances and unplug the ones that are not needed.
He also recommends replacing old light bulbs with energy efficient models and putting a timer on your block heater.
