2012 is the year for East Village

After nearly five years of ground work, developers say this is the year downtown Calgary’s East Village starts moving upward.

The Calgary Municipal Land Corporation expects the community’s first project to break ground this summer.

It’s a critical time for those behind the project.

With more than $100 million in infrastructure already in place and a sales centre slated to open in late March, CMLC President Michael Brown sees 2012 as a huge step toward Calgary’s newest community taking shape.

“Think about it guys:  When else do you have the opportunity to take a whole side of downtown…and build a great community?  We can do it well and we need to do it well,” says Brown.

Brown expects it will take up to 15 years to see the 49 acres fully built out.

However, with two projects starting this year and thousands of people expressing interest already, he’s confident the East Village dream is taking a turn toward reality.
