Airport tunnel already over budget

Don’t blame members of City Council if they get sticker-shock the next time they take a close look at the cost of the airport tunnel under construction in the northeast.

The cost of the tunnel alone, being installed under a new runway going in at the airport, was $295-million, but that doesn’t include the roads and interchanges needed to make the east-west route operational between 36th Street and Barlow Trail.

When those costs are added, final price tips the scales at over half-a-billion dollars; about $200-million more than the city has budgeted.
