Not so wily hunter?

City police dispatched the tactical team and Hawcs helicopter to Bearspaw in the city’s northwest, Monday morning shortly after 9, after receiving a call about a man in a field with what appeared to be a long barrel rifle.

Duty Inspector Darren Leggatt tells 660News that shortly after police arrived in the Bearspaw area, the matter was diffused within an hour.

(We) “subsequently determined he was there for the purposes of eradicating coyotes from the property,” says Leggatt.  “He was there for a peaceful purpose.  The reality is that he may not realize the implications of being armed with a firearm.”

Leggatt says it’s illegal to hunt any type of animal in the city, even if it’s considered a predator.

As a result, it’s still possible that the man could face charges.

During the incident, the nearby Bearspaw Christian School was locked down for a brief period.
