The best speed skaters from around the world are in Calgary this weekend for an I-S-U sanctioned World Sprint Speed Skating event at the Olympic Oval.

Among those taking part are Olympic heroes, both present and past.

“We have the defending World Champion Christine Nesbitt,” Gregg Planert, Vice Chair of Technical for the Olympic Oval Organizing Committee. “She was just off the world record this past weekend in Salt Lake” (City).

Nesbitt is one of Canada’s most decorated athletes, winning gold at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver.

“We have a tribute to Jeremy Wotherspoon at the end of the day on Saturday, which will be about 3:45,” adds Planert. “His picture will be going up on the Oval wall.”

Events get underway at 12:05pm both Saturday and Sunday.
