The community of Vulcan remembered the life of Otto “Bunty” Loose Sunday afternoon.
With at least 600 people in attendance, they recalled Loose for who he was: a happy, kind man, who was loved by those around him and the tragic loss has affected not only his family and friends, but the entire town.
Loose’s saddle, cowboy hat and boots sat at the tables in the entryway to the Vulcan Recreation Centre, where the memorial service was held.
Photos were passed around to those in attendance, with different images of Loose, from happy moments during his life.
His nephew drove from Edmonton for the service and fought back tears remembering his uncle.
He said his family has received an outpouring of support, “It’s pretty amazing. From what I’ve watched and read on the internet, it’s pretty shocking to think that something like that would happen in an area like this, especially to a guy like that.”
Barry Williams, a retired member of the Vulcan farming community now living in Calgary, says the support the community has shown is no surprise.
Williams was teary eyed after the service and says despite the horrific end to Loose’s life, the memorial highlighted his happiest moments.
“It was about his life and he was a happy go-lucky guy.”
The 77-year old retired farmer was kidnapped from his home January 8th and his body was found in a wooded area near Claresholm, six days later.
35-year old Timmy Douglas Engel has been charged with first degree murder.
