Murder charges laid following summer home invasion

Calgary police have charged two men with first-degree murder in a home invasion killing in the northeast last summer.

53-year-old Cuong Viet Doan died in hospital of gunshot wounds after masked intruders burst into his home along Marcombe Drive in Marlborough in June 2011.

The man’s wife and son were also injured in the home invasion.

Homicide detectives have now charged 30-year-old Jeffrey Thomas McPherson and 23-year-old Joshua John Smith with one count each of first-degree murder, attempted murder and forcible confinement.

Both men are in custody.

Police also issued a province-wide warrant for a 26-year-old woman, who goes by the name Lily, on conspiracy and break and enter charges. She turned herself into police without incident Tuesday night, where she remains in police custody.
