Fire crews responded Thursday evening to a two alarm blaze in the community of Westbrook.
The call came in around 5:30 p.m. from a home along 15th Avenue southwest.
Neighbour Samantha Ingram tells our sister station CityTV the homeowner was making coffee and plugged in the electric kettle on the stove then went upstairs to make a phone call. When she came back down, she heard crackling and saw the fire.
Luckily everyone in the home was able to get out safely.
Ingram adds, the home owner does not have insurance. She gave kudos to fire crews for going back into the home to rescue two cats.
Meanwhile about 30 minutes later around 6:00 p.m. fire crews attended another fire in the southwest, this one in a high rise building.
Battalion Chief Larry Fisher tells 660News fire crews climbed the stairs to the seventh floor and began evacuating that floor of about 50 people when they found the fire.
“The fire tact team found a fire in a kitchen and extinguished it in short order,” adds Fisher.
Only the unit involved was affected. There were no other injuries reported and a damage estimate is unknown at this time.
